Tong Forging
Blacksmithing: Level 3

Tongs are an essential tool for the blacksmith, and are notoriously tricky to make.

Whether you have never made them before, have struggled with them, need a refresher, or simply need more of them (who doesn’t?), join us for a weekend of tong making! We will discuss tong anatomy, as well as stylistic and functional variations to help you figure out what you like best.

We will start with the fundamental skills for creating flat bit tongs, which are the basic skills needed to create other styles. We will then create scroll tongs.

You will learn:

  • The steps for forging both flat bit and scroll tongs.

  • How to produce different styles of “boss”.

  • How to fit your tongs to your material for a good, secure hold.

  • How to rivet the halves together.

  • The pace to forge at and how to carefully check measurements.

  • Different styles of reigns.

  • How to adjust the reigns to fit your own hands for a comfortable and secure grip.

We will be using coke-powered forges. Instructions on how to light and manage a coke fire will also be covered.

Leave with more tools in your toolbox and the skills to keep going!

Previous forging experience is required (For example, our Intro to Forging: Level 1 course).
