Hors d'oeuvres

During this 2 day course you will experience what it is like to shape both copper and steel using fire and hammers. You will forge a series of rustic steel cheese knives, and some small copper and steel serving dishes to match. These dishes are perfect for accompanying fruits, nuts, jams and dips.

During these projects, you will be introduced to the basics of coppersmithing and blacksmithing, experiencing the properties of both metals and the different tools required to shape them. You will learn how to use fire to heat the materials, and how to hammer beautiful texture into your unique kitchenware.

Two cheese knife designs will be shown: one for cutting hard cheeses and another for spreading soft cheeses or spreads. You will have the opportunity to modify the knife handles to your own design, adding curves, texture or twists to make them truly personalized.

Prerequisites: None.

Class runs from 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday with a 1h lunch. All materials, safety equipment, coffee and tea will be provided. Lunch is available in town / an indoor lunch area with a microwave and fridge is provided on site if you bring your own food. Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
