Damascus Intensive

Part 1: Forging Damascus

In this two-day introductory class, students will delve into the intricate world of Damascus steel, also known as pattern-welded steel. Under the expert guidance of Allen Rozon, participants will learn the foundational techniques required to create a small billet of Damascus steel, which they then have the option of using later in Allen's chef knife forging class.

What to Expect:

  • Material Selection: Allen will provide a selection of steels, explaining the properties and benefits of each type. Students will learn how to prepare and clean the steels to ensure a successful forge weld.

  • Billet Preparation: Participants will stack and tack weld the layers of steel to form a billet. Allen will demonstrate the proper technique for aligning and securing the layers.

  • Forge Welding: Students will experience the critical process of forge welding, where they will heat and hammer the billet to fuse the layers together. Allen will provide step-by-step guidance, ensuring each student achieves a solid weld.

  • Creative Patterning: Once the billet is welded, students will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques to create unique patterns in their Damascus steel. Allen will share tips and tricks for achieving various designs.

  • Heat Treatment: An introduction to heat treating the billet to enhance its durability and performance.

  • Etching: The class will conclude with the etching process, where students will reveal the beautiful patterns in their Damascus steel by using an etching compound.

By the end of the class, students will have created their own piece of pattern-welded steel, gaining a deep understanding of the art and science behind Damascus steel. This class provides a solid foundation for those looking to advance their skills in future forging classes.

Class runs 2 days, from 9am-5pm each day, with a 1h lunch. All materials, safety equipment, coffee and tea will be provided. Lunch is available in town / an indoor lunch area with a microwave and fridge is provided on site if you bring your own food. Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
