Concept
In collaboration with teacher Erin Ledlow and her students, Two Smiths facilitated the design and making of a wall-mounted Holocaust Memorial that was permanently installed at Cameron Heights High School. In the centre are two hands; one is bare and the other is a protective helping hand, which is represented by the gauntlet. This gesture is encircled by a wreath of laurel leaves. Each leaf in the wreath contains a symbol and name of an WW2 upstander that was researched by the students. The images and words are etched into the surface of the copper.
Process
Working at Cameron Heights in both the classroom and in the school workshop, each student designed a symbol to etch onto a laurel leaf, cut copper out, filed and shaped. A group of students worked at Two Smiths to etch the copper, shape the hand and gauntlet and assemble the piece.
